BBQ chicken on a golden brown bun with coleslaw

BBQ Chicken Sliders

How do you make BBQ chicken sliders good enough for dinner? Build the flavor before the sauce goes in. A little onion in the pan, enough seasoning on the chicken, and then sauce to bring it together gives you a slider filling with a lot more depth than the usual quick shortcut.

This version still keeps things simple. You can use a barbecue sauce your family already likes, or use ketchup and let the seasoning come through more clearly. Either way, the chicken is chopped or shredded so it holds the flavor well and piles easily onto the buns.

Recipe Summary

Serves: 6 to 8
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 10 to 15 minutes, plus time to cook the chicken if needed
Best For: dinner, casual gatherings, backyard meals, easy group food

Ingredients

  • 3 cups cooked chicken, chopped or shredded
  • 1 tablespoon oil or butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons Shawhan Farms Betty’s Best Sweet & Smoky BBQ Rub
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup barbecue sauce, or ketchup if preferred
  • 8 slider buns
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, if you want to brush the tops

Optional toppings

  • sliced pickles
  • thinly sliced red onion
  • shredded slaw
  • cheddar cheese

Instructions

1. Cook the onion
Heat the oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened.

2. Add the chicken and seasoning
Add the chopped or shredded chicken and sprinkle in the BBQ rub. Stir well so the chicken is evenly coated.

3. Add the sauce
Stir in the barbecue sauce or ketchup and cook just until the filling is hot and well mixed. Add a splash of water if needed to loosen it.

4. Build the sliders
Pile the chicken onto the slider buns and add any toppings you want to use.

5. Warm the tray if you want
Set the tops on, brush with melted butter if you like, and warm the sliders in a 350 F oven for a few minutes until lightly toasted.

Why This Works

Chicken for sliders needs flavor underneath the sauce. The onion gives the filling a better base, the rub seasons the meat itself, and the sauce finishes it instead of covering everything up.

Our Betty’s Best works especially well here because it brings sweet smoke, savory depth, and enough backbone to keep the filling from tasting one-note. It is a premium blend that is convenient to keep on hand, and it gives everyday foods a fuller barbecue flavor without needing a long list of extras.

Betty was the kind of cook who could take what was on hand and turn it into something people actually wanted to come back for. This blend follows that same spirit, sweet at first, but with enough depth and character to keep things interesting.

Kitchen Notes

This is a good use for leftover roasted chicken, grilled chicken, or rotisserie chicken.

If you are using ketchup instead of barbecue sauce, taste and adjust at the end. The seasoning will come through more clearly.

Kitchen Variations

  • use pulled pork instead of chicken
  • add slaw for more crunch
  • melt cheddar on top before serving
  • use Hawaiian rolls for a sweeter slider
  • serve the filling over baked potatoes if you do not want buns
